Chili’s opened as a fun Dallas burger joint with a loyalty to happy hour and blue jeans. We prided ourselves on our humble beginnings, following a devotion to great food, warm hospitality and community spirit. Today, with restaurants all over the world, we continue to cook up the best in casual fare, offering the same genuine service we did way back when. And, just as in 1975, we’re committed to giving back to the communities that have helped us grow. From fresh, hand-prepared salads to mouthwatering burgers. Chili’s kicks up the flavour with food that is anything but ordinary. From our first days in Dallas, Chili’s history has been peppered with years of fun fables and memorable moments.

Q Artists Cooperative is a gallery that is made up of professional local artists to the Wisconsin area. The Q Artists Cooperative hosts Events and workshops both in the gallery and outside the gallery. They strive to support the local flavor of artists. From the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center start out going south on Amber Ave toward US -10W, turn right onto US-10 , US-10 W becomes WI-66 S, turn slight left onto Main St, Q Artists Cooperative is on the left.

Our purpose is to support a vibrant community of fine artists, to provide an opportunity to exhibit and sell regional fine art under a juried system, to enhance professional development among artists, and to benefit the community as a whole. Our mission is to create art for the community and a community for artists. Our gallery is owned and operated by Q Artists Cooperative. Cooperatives are owned and democratically controlled by their members. A Fine Arts Co-op, like Q, is a business owned and controlled by those who produce art and exists to meet the needs of it’s members by marketing fine art. We hope to educate the wider community about art. Artist Members, who are all working artists, pay dues to cover expenses, work gallery hours, serve on committees, and participate in the running of the business. You will most likely meet a different artist each time you return to the gallery. We have also chosen to represent a few select Commission Only Artists who are not currently working members. Artist Memberships and Commission Only Artists are granted entrance into the gallery by application and jury. We are committed to growth and development of individual artists as well as the growth of fine art in the community at large. The gallery is intentionally located in a renovated building at the heart of downtown in the effort to make our community a place where buying local is rewarding and strolling down Main Street is a pleasure.

Out and About

Get a taste for the Stevens Point area, at one of three local breweries. Tour the historic Stevens Point Brewery, a local favorite since 1857, complete with samples. Then be sure to explore the Central Waters Brewery, in Amherst, ranked as one of the best breweries in the nation, or the newest micro-brewery O’so Brewing Company known for freestyle brewing. Despite their close proximity, each brewery has something different to offer in style, atmosphere and experience.

If you’re still thirsty for more, head outdoors. Explore the best views in the county on foot or by bike and follow the Green Circle Trail, a 30.5 mile trail that circles the city of Stevens Point winding along the Wisconsin River, Little Plover River and other tributaries. The trailhead for the Green Circle Trail is located in the Schmeeckle Reserve, a 280-acre nature preserve on the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point campus. Hike or bike the Ice Age Trail and wind through the hills and valleys once shaped by glaciers. More glacial trails framed by woods and wildlife are available at Standing Rocks County Park. Or take a journey down a once abandoned railroad bed, by foot, bike or horseback, where the 18-mile Tomorrow River State Trail brings the county’s history and natural beauty to the forefront. Birding is also varied and plentiful in Portage County. As part of the Central Sands Prairie Region of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail, the area offers the Buena Vista Grasslands, Godfrey & Maybelle Erickson Audubon Park, Dewey Marsh State Natural Area, Iverson Park, Richard A. Hemp State Fishery Area, Schmeeckle Reserve, and the George W. Mead Wildlife Area.

Venture out on one of the many waterways in Portage County. More than 40 lakes, an array of rivers, streams, and flowages offer an opportunity to fish, kayak, canoe and swim. County parks, such as Lake DuBay, Lake Emily, Jordan Park, and Collins Park offer a variety of uses, as well as camping.

Need to rest your legs but still want to cover some ground? Experience area attractions, history, food, museums and more by staying on the road less traveled as you retrace the routes once forged in the past. Rediscover the roots of Portage County, by bike or car, by quietly winding through the countryside on the Polish Heritage Trail, where the first rural Polish settlement in Wisconsin and second in the United States was established. Highway 51 is a road that links heritage, culture and explores the north/south corridor of the county and encourages your journey on the roads less traveled. Journey to the crossroads of Highway 51 and Highway B (in Plover), where time will allow you to reminisce of days gone by with unmarked roads and no map to call your own along the Yellowstone Trail. The road, once marked by yellow stones, was the first cross-country route from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound. While the roads have changed, the charm has not.

If you’re still looking for a good drive,

visit one of the areas golf courses. The Wisconsin River Golf Club, known for its picturesque course along the river, allows you to play up to 6584 yards. SentryWorld’s championship golf course is ranked as one of Wisconsin’s top courses, known for its signature flower hole.

If you’re ready to retreat indoors for some rest and relaxation, be sure to visit The Wellness Spa, a full-service spa where relaxation embraces you the minute you walk through the door.

When hunger strikes, be prepared to respond. Take in the historic downtown district and specialty sandwiches, as you sit on antique chairs at the Wooden Chair. Walk through a 130 year old beer vat to enjoy a local favorite at the Hilltop Pub & Grill. Enjoy a bayou inspired dish in a refurbished 1905 railroad car at the Silver Coach. Get a different perspective and an enticing entrÈe at @1800 overlooking a tranquil natural setting, or enjoy a traditional Wisconsin Fish fry with “Fish on the Fly” at the Red Mill. Hungry for something other than the traditional Wisconsin Fish Fry, but still want an authentic Wisconsin supper club setting? Visit Two Lakes Restaurant, to try the famous drunken chicken and traditional Italian dinner, nestled in the countryside between two lakes. Be sure to explore the many restaurants in Portage County that are accessible by snowmobile or boat.

Discover the roots of Portage County first hand by visiting historical sites throughout the county. The Portage County Historical Society operates several museums with rotating exhibits and events that are open to the public. Heritage Park in Plover, the Beth Israel Synagogue and the Historic Fire House #2 in Stevens Point and the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville offer a unique look at the area’s history. Learn more about the area’s history along with the role it played in Wisconsin’s conservation history at the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, in the Schmeeckle Reserve. Then, be inspired by local initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint we leave behind. Explore the Renew the Earth Institute, headquarters for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, or discover new ways to limit our impact at one of many Artha Sustainable Living Center workshops.

Inspired by the beauty of the area, arts are an integral part of Portage County. Reflected in the art of Portage County residents, it is woven into the architecture and lifestyles of each community. A number of art galleries offer numerous viewing opportunities. The Stevens Point Sculpture Park features artwork intertwined amidst nature, along a scenic walking trail. In the fall, individual artists along the Ice Age Trail host the Hidden Studios Tour, inviting individuals to discover the working studios of artists in Portage County. Murals are dotted throughout the area. Several, dedicated to the past, are on display in Downtown Stevens Point. A mosaic mural, titled “E Pluribus Unum,” which stands more than 150 feet wide and 50 feet high is located on the College of Natural Resources Building on the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point campus.

Nestled in the center of the state, its landscape is as diverse as the rich cultural fabric that represents its communities.

Covering more than 800 square miles in Central Wisconsin, Portage County has one city, 17 townships and nine villages. Most of the county is rural offering year-round recreational opportunities, dotted with small communities like Junction City, Almond, Rosholt, Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst Junction.

When Stevens Point was first founded in 1858, the logging industry and trading posts defined the location. With help from the Wisconsin River, the railroad and rich soil, the area continues to prosper. Today, the area has a diverse economy, home to headquarters for such companies as Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard and Herrschners. Established in 1894, the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point has been a staple in the community. The 400-acre campus includes the Schmeekle Reserve, a 280-acre nature preserve which includes a 24-acre lake. The University also houses the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, Museum of Natural History, Carlsten Art Gallery, Planetarium, and numerous cultural exhibits and performances throughout the year.

The Village of Plover, the most populated village in Portage County, was incorporated in 1971. Located in the central sand plain, it is home to a diverse mix of industry. With an emphasis on agricultural and service businesses, local employers include paper companies and numerous agricultural suppliers like Okray, Paragon Farms, Del Monte, Golden County Foods, and McCain Foods. Steadily developing as a shopping hub in the Central Wisconsin region, it is also home to the Korean War Memorial, at Lake Pacawa, Heritage Park which features 10 buildings from Portage County’s past (one of four historical sites maintained by the Portage County Historical Society), and 19 parks.

The Village of Amherst is located along the shores of the Tomorrow River. Nestled in eastern Portage County, in an area shaped by glaciers, it offers a varied landscape of rolling hills. A quiet community, it has a very strong sense of place, complete with a strong business, art and environmental sectors. Amherst is home to the Lettie Jensen Community Center, American Governor and Central Waters Brewing Company, conveniently located along the Tomorrow River State Trail and near Lake Emily County Park.

The Lake Dubay Area, situated in northwestern Portage County, encompasses most of the townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey. Mostly rural, this area offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for each season.

Hwy. 51

Experience area attractions, history, food, museums, and more by staying on the road less traveled. Highway 51 is a road that links heritage, culture, and the Northwoods of Wisconsin to southern Louisiana. Traveling through six states, Highway 51 creates a pathway for travelers to explore the many cultures, cuisines and nostalgia of Wisconsin.

Fifteen communities along Highway 51 in Wisconsin have come together, to emphasize the joy of the journey. All along Highway 51, travelers will experience the culture, cuisine and quirks that are part of each community. Highway 51 includes the stories of Abraham Lincoln, railroads, Elvis Presley and Graceland, blues music, industry icons, civil rights, and plantation life. There’s a wealth of diverse cultures, traditions, music, and food stretching from the American Heartland to the Deep South. Crossing into Portage County on Highway 51 brings you into the heart of Wisconsin. Getting to the center of the journey is the best part, especially when it’s nestled amidst an abundance of green space and waterways, highlighted by recreational activities, industry, and heritage. This portion of the route is dotted with art and culture, with just a hint of beer from our local breweries.

Learn more about the stories along Highway 51, or create one of your own, by planning your journey online at www.explorehwy51.com or by stopping by the Stevens Point Area Visitor Information Center at exit 161 to pick up a copy of the Journey Journal and Passport.
Yellowstone Trail

The Yellowstone Trail was established and stretched from “Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound.” Between 1915, when the Yellowstone Trail Association extended the Trail to Chicago, and the 1930’s the Yellowstone Trail served Wisconsin from Kenosha to Hudson. This year, 2012, the historic auto trail celebrates its 100th Anniversary!

The Yellowstone Trail enters Portage County from the east in the quaint Village of Amherst. Should your journey include an overnight stay, the Amherst Inn B&B is a Victorian gothic style house built in 1887. Continuing on County B into the Village of Plover, a visit to Heritage Park reveals an authentic Yellowstone Trail cabin amongst the other period buildings gathered from around the county. Traveling north on Business 51 motorists enter the City of Stevens Point, home of the Stevens Point Brewery which has a rich heritage of brewing excellence since 1857. Tours are available. Also in Stevens Point is the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s “Old Main” built in 1893-94. Heading west, your route on the Yellowstone Trail takes you through the historic downtown district with its turn of the century urban architecture. Besides these archaic buildings and locations there are many more places of historical value all along the trail. Come see for yourself and help the Yellowstone Trail celebrate its anniversary with a walk through history. With leaders including Aldo Leopold, John Muir, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin has proven its commitment to the environment time and time again. Locally, the Stevens Point area is home to the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, honoring the people who worked to preserve the very things that make our state unique, and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Renew the Earth Institute.

To protect the environment, the very green spaces and waterways that define our area and make it desirable to visitors and residents, it will take continued effort and support from individuals, businesses and the community. Portage County by its nature is positioned perfectly to embrace these concepts. Our green space infrastructures are no coincidence. Citizen and governmentally led stewardship of our natural resources, along with strong support from local advocacy groups have maintained an exceptionally high quality of life and sense of place.

Joerns Healthcare offers wound, safety and design solutions to the healthcare industry. Their solutions are targeted at staff and patients, to ensure safe and efficient care is delivered consistently and efficiently while maximizing patient comfort. From the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center start out going south on Amber Ave toward US -10W, turn right onto US-10 W, US-10 W becomes Main St/WI-66 S, turn left onto Country Club Dr, turn left onto Joerns DR, Joerns Healthcare is on the right.

The key business components of Joerns Healthcare have always been strong leadership, perseverance and personal commitment from the company’s leadership and associates. Founded in 1889 in St. Paul, Minnesota as Joerns Brothers Furniture by three brothers, Charles, Paul and Frederick Joerns, relocated to Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1905. Charles Joerns bought out his brothers and ran a very prosperous but small company. In 1927, the company suffered a fire, which spurred relocation to Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Joerns Brothers Furniture prospered in the 1940’s and 1950’s by manufacturing elegant and elaborate bedroom and dining room sets, which sold to upscale retail furniture stores for up to $1,000. Charles Joerns managed his company profitably until his death in 1941. The medical industry continued to gain prominence as the company’s leading market niche and in 1983, the company name was changed to Joerns Healthcare. That same year, Joerns affiliated with three other companies to form a new holding company – Sunrise Medical Inc. The formation of Sunrise Medical Inc. permitted a public issue of stock, which generated capital for new products and expansions. The breakthrough FreeStyle® bed, introduced in 1991, broke new ground for Joerns Healthcare as well as the industry. The FreeStyle offered the convenience and economy of a manual bed, but without the hassles of hand-turned cranks. In 2004, we launched the well-known and trusted Hoyer® Professional Series lifts and slings. Hoyer lifts are specially designed for long-term care and offer unmatched safety, versatility and easy handling of residents. For over 100 years, Joerns Healthcare’s products and services have provided unmatched, legendary quality blended with excellence through innovation and exemplary customer service.

Herrschners is a leader in the crafting industry for over 100 years. They pride themselves. On helping crafters finding joy in their creations. Herrschners has a wide range of products including cross-stitch, scrapbooking, beading, knitting and crochet, as well as many other crafters delights. From the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center start out going south on Amber Ave toward US -10W, turn right onto US-10 W, US-10 W becomes Main St/WI-66 S, turn left onto Country Club Dr, Country Club Dr becomes Hoover Ave N, Herrschners is just past Industrial Park Rd.

According to company folklore, Herrschners was founded by a young German immigrant named Frederick Herrschners. At the end of the 1800′s, it was common to see street vendors plying their wares from pushcarts on the streets of Chicago, including Frederick who sold sewing notions from his pushcart to many satisfied customers. They knew he sold quality items and came to depend on him.At the same time, America’s mass exodus to the west was going through Chicago. Many of Frederick’s customers heeded the call to find land but found that the quality products they were accustomed to purchasing were no longer available in their new communities. They wrote to Frederick and asked if he could mail them the goods and notions they needed. This gave Frederick the idea that launched the company: he would develop a catalog and sell his merchandise to those who had no other outlet for the quality goods he provided. The rest as they say is history—this catalog company has been in continuous operation for 100 years! Frederick operated the business from various locations in Chicago until his death in 1929. At that point, the business was sold and remained in Chicago until 1970. Stevens Point, WI was a stopping point for many Chicago vacationers, one of whom was a former company owner. He was drawn by the quality of life and great work ethic of this central Wisconsin community, so the operation of the business was relocated here, where it continues to this day.
